Study Task 2:What Is Graphic Design - Part 1

Identify 5 examples of Graphic Design appearing in different contexts

Context: Book cover

Front cover of my favourite book 'One Day' by David Nicholls
I really like silhouettes and therefore this piece of graphic design appeals to me. Its simple but relevant to the narrative. It also switches the usual black silhouette to colour and makes the title of the book stand out more in black.
Context: Beer mat

This is a beer mat i got during freshers advertising a night at the pub. I thought it was a good combination of image and type focusing on a simple message and very much getting the point across, especially as its on a beer mat.
Context: Bag

This was on a bag i got at freshers. Throughout all there leaflets and advertisement they keep the same line illustration and fonts. I quite like the style they've created for there bar.
Context: Packet of sauce

This is a pub packet of mayonnaise which uses the same if not similar label as the full size product which immediately makes a connection to the brand.
Context: Wrapping paper

This was designed by I Love Dust.
I like good packaging, parcels and string so this i particularly liked as well as the print, composition of text and line and stand out red sticker.

Identify 5 examples of Graphic Design performing different functions

Function: bring an identity and brand to a specificWest Sussex based restaurant, this being an example of there take away cups

I like prints like this with different lines, spacing, size texts and symbols.

Also, i enjoy little quirky add ons to normal everyday objects.
Function: advertise the channel in between shows

This is a clip from a programme animation also created by i love dust
I liked how it was all textured as if drawing had come to life and the thin black lines clearly outlined each little component. I suppose it is its complexity that interests me as i don't really no much about making something like this. (yet)
Function: advertise whats on at HIFI on a particular day of the week

I like the mix of fonts in a collective rectangle, each one for a different artist. I also like the white on black, i think its effective.
Function: advertise a night at the O2 academy with a famous Dj

This i think is in complete contrast to the other one with vivid colours, illustration and maintaining the same font with the night logo much larger and separate in style to the rest of the text. Yet both graphics are for the same function.

Identify 5 examples of Graphic Design delivering different types of messages

Type of message: Factual and informative

I like quotes of texts in large speech marks which this booklet included along with little illustrations of people drinking, all representing a situation that may occur to do with drink driving. The swap of colours for backgound of font is has a good effect especially as the deeper marroon colour is much more dramatic as a background. This accompanies the seriousness of what this page is saying in contrast to what the opposite is implying.
Type of message: Inform and instruct

This is a front cover of a fire saftey booklet and uses dramatic, bold colours and shapes but maintains relatively simple. I like the house made up of regular shapes with the nationally known figures representing male and females.
Type of message: Professional, organised and formal

This is a page of a new high end, trendy fashion line that the magazine describes as 'bringing chic back to the streets, dressing men and women in sharp allure'. This page is bringing a message of elegance and the new vintage style which is very in at the moment in the fashion industry. I like the alignment of the bows and ties coming from the left edge of the page along with the text aganist its side.
Type of message: Advertisement

I love the instant contrast between colour, the font used for both sides, use of line and movement. Without reading the small sections of text you can clearly see the difference in the two sides and what there trying to say.

Identify 5 examples of Graphic Design produced using different media

Media: Letterpress

I love prints, this is just one of many that intrigue me because i've never done it before. Plus this one has a quite aged, vintagey look with a deep red which i also like.
Media: Print

I like to delicacy of this flyer and the soft colours.
Media: printed photography

Photography is another media that graphic designers use and of which i'm quite fond of. I especially like action shot stills such as the one on the cover.

Media:

I love the mix of fonts combined together as well as the images that come from the film faded and layered with the text. The overall dark musty look is also something i like, it ties in with the film.
Media: Paper

I really love paper art whether its image, typography, stencils or 3D structures. This is just one way that paper can be manipulated.

Identify 5 examples of Graphic Design produced at different scales

Scale: large

This shop and brand has been redesigned and reinvented by Section D.
Although the typography bubbles are only small elements of graphic design its not the only thing that's been alter, all the fixtures, lighting, text and colours are intertwined to create an identity.
 Scale: Large

I like all the different comparments layering up making up one big picture.
 Scale: Small

Chocolate packaging created by Section D. I like the difference in the usual commercial chocolate wrapping and these. The authentic style pictures give a much different look than the bright coloured cartooned wrappers.
 Scale: Small

This is a small business card for Hifi which is a club. I like the simplicity and old styled design.
Scale: Small

This is a rizler packet with a difference as it actually has an origami pattern on the inside as well as holds papers which makes it multi purpose and fun.

The only way is up

what did i learn?
i really do need this course

Why on earth am i here?

Study Task 1: Why am i here?- What do i want to learn?
(in advance sorry about spelling, puntuation, general lack of proper understanding of the english language etc, i no it really bugs some people)

doodled as the task was given
Identify and explain 5 reasons why you chose to study on this programme

  1.  I did the interview brief for here and being me set a laser machine on fire and my teacher told me i better get an interview after the cost and damage of it, luckily i did and when i got taken round i was like a child in a candy store with my jaw dropped to the floor, i knew instantly this was where i wanted to be, the enviroment was perfect and the equiptment excited me even when i had no idea what on earth it was. I loved how there was a whole place dedicated to the arts, that was serious, focused and experienced in creating artists in all practices and gave them the oppurtunity, location and equiptment to become one. After going to a sixth form where the budget didnt cover glue sticks or sissors and art was overlooked for academic subjects or time to talk to you about how onions have layers in a presentation, this was a dream i didnt know existed.
  2. When searching for universities i actually read the course content instead of the nightlife of the town and felt that we had common goals and understanding as it stated we would explore meaning and messages in images and type. I always put thought and deep meaning into every part of my work and aim to get a message across to the audience through every aspect of it. Theres nothing i hate more than stuff thats been churned out without any thought, purpose or meaning, is there any point of it?
  3. I also liked how this programme was so focused on developing you as a individual person, a graphic designer and someone ready for the workplace. Within the first two weeks of introduction i have noticed the intensity and methods which will prepare us for going into work, wether i like the thought of getting up at the crack of dawn everyday or not, i do know that it will aid us in the future and we will be prepared for whats coming our way. Most universitys and courses just talk at you about a subject for three years and then leave you to it, not fred. God help anyone who is late to monday morning briefs.
  4. Another reason i chose this programme was because i wanted to develop my talents and weaknesses that i have equired so far. The course said it was going to teach you all the different techniques, skills etc and thats what i need as i am so unexperienced in basically all practices and would love to be able to create what i see in my head.
  5. My final reason is to help me communicate and focus my thoughts in the right direction because sometimes it can be a bit messy up in my noggin' and i'm a tad of a tidy freak.
Identify and explain 5 things that you want to learn during your time on the programme

  1. I really want to learn new techniques and skills such as screen printing etc im starting to become paranoid that this doesnt spell check or alter things automactically so maybe one skill i might try enquire is the english language. But no i really do want be able to create the things i look at and think wow! how did they do that, that'd be so cool (plus people can say wow at what i do which is always a bonus)
  2. I would like to expand my knowledge of designers and the industry as im pants with names and always see things i like put could never tell you who it was or find it another time (google is my life for understanding what i mean). I would like to be able to look at a piece of work and name who did it by the style.
  3. Please teach me how to use software to a high standard so i can create what i think up, i don't want to limit myself to what i no because it really is a small amount, im very unexperienced in comparison to some and want to be able to design snazzy stuff.
  4. I want to be confident in what i do, i don't want to question my ability or put myself down because i will so easily use it as an excuse. I don't want to feel like a fish out of water and be threatened by everyone elses talent and experiences, i want to embace others skills and use them to aid me in mine. Afterall teamwork can make a dream work ;)
  5. It'd make my life alot easier if i learnt the standard process of design so i can achieve a thought through, developed, well researched piece of work. I want my final outcomes to of gone through a system in which i understand and use because otherwise i get lost and hate when things arent in a particular order leading me to not like what im doing
Identify and explain 5 skills that you think are your strengths

  1. i think i'm pretty alright at coming up with ideas and they can be quite imaginative and creative at times, hopefully i'll get to a point where i have no boundaries preventing me from doing them.
  2. i'm quite open-minded to new things and will always attempt something or give it ago
  3. i work hard to achieve what i want, im driven and work to succeed at what im doing
  4. im a strong person at times and i can express opinions openly, those of which i have many of
  5. i noticed this week im confident in a group of people and im a good talker
Identify and explain 5 things that you want to improve

  1. i want to be able to communicate my ideas clearly to others verbally, sometimes its only me who understands what i mean because i have a limited vocabulary and struggle to get what i mean across to the poor soul who has to listen
  2. it'd be handy to focus my thoughts and ideas so i don't try do all of them in one, i want to improve my selection process so i can select appropriately to my project instead of going mad and trying to do all in one go
  3. although i think i'm quite a confident person i would like to improve parts of it further because i can often get walked all over and be used or be in a situation where my voice isnt heard, so im going improve my SHOUTing basically
  4. i really need to improve my evaulation and annotation of work and research, im not good at talking about pieces of work in a very valid and articulate [big word ;)] way
  5. Finally and probably very importantly to my success on staying on this course/alive is improving my getting up and getting in on time skills because like i said i'm not a morning person and nor shall i ever be however in life you do things you don't like so challenge accepted! i can be stubborn and a bit competitive so hopefully that should aid me in this mountain i have to climb
Identify and explain 5 ways that you will evaluate your progress

  1. One way will be to assess the development of the standard of my work from the beginning to the end
  2. I can use criticisms of my fellow graphic crew and tutors wether that be from blog comments or the crit things we have. Also wether or not i then apply them to my future work because whats the point of getting hard criticism that will most likely cut deep sometimes if you don't use it to learn and move on
  3. Wether or not i manage to get through the course alive i think will demonstrate my progress quite well especially as i flew sideways off my chair whilst trying to read what the crit thing is really called, as you can see from the previous point i failed and just read rough carpet (another point for the improve one 6. learn normal coordination and balance/just up off your bum and look)
  4. I will evalute my progress through my module results, nothing is quite as clear as a nice green grass tick or a fat devil red cross
  5. I think a good way to see my progress will be my vocabulary development, might become an adult in the process and learn real words instead of googling for alternatives
Identify 5 questions that you want to find the answer to

  1. will the early mornings really pay off because i'd rather lie in to be honest
  2. do stalks deliver mac laptops as well as babies and if they do : liberty park flat 1101 (anyone else willing feel free)
  3. is anyone else as clueless as me about everything on this course, if you are say hey, we can discuss
  4. whats love got to do, got to do with it (current song playing)
  5. on a more serious note, why am i here?
i talk to much
imogen.
